Cardiac Arrest Survivor Completes London Marathon After Miraculous Rescue

In a heart-stopping incident that occurred in January 2021, Chris Rowell’s life hung in the balance as he suffered a cardiac arrest while sitting on the toilet. As he collapsed, his phone dropped to the floor, alerting his partner, Becka. Hearing the commotion, Becka rushed upstairs to find Rowell unresponsive. Quick-thinking and resolute, she immediately called 999 and sought the assistance of their nurse neighbor. Together, they performed CPR for 20 minutes until paramedics arrived and transported Rowell to the hospital.

Upon arrival at the hospital, Rowell was rushed into surgery for a balloon angioplasty and remained in a coma for three days. Fortunately, he regained consciousness and embarked on a remarkable recovery journey. Three months after his cardiac arrest, Rowell underwent a treadmill test and was given the green light to start running again. Inspired by his newfound lease on life, he set his sights on completing the London Marathon to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation.

Rowell’s journey was marked by both physical and emotional challenges. Having a cardiac arrest and facing the trauma of that experience undoubtedly weighed heavily on his mind. However, with the unwavering support of Becka and his family, he pressed on. Six months after his collapse, Rowell proposed to Becka, and they married last June. They welcomed a baby boy, Hugo, who is now 20 months old.

On race day, Rowell was cheered along the course by Becka, Hugo, and his sons, Sam and Lewis. Despite the grueling nature of the 26.2-mile run, Rowell persevered, crossing the finish line in an impressive time of 4 hours, 53 minutes, and 56 seconds. In doing so, he raised an incredible £2,500 for the British Heart Foundation, a charity dedicated to supporting people affected by heart and circulatory diseases.

Reflecting on his experience, Rowell expressed his profound gratitude for the support he received from Becka and his medical team. He also emphasized the importance of the research conducted by the British Heart Foundation, highlighting its potential to save and improve lives. Rowell’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. Through his unwavering determination and unwavering support, he has not only overcome a life-threatening event but has also made a significant contribution to helping others facing similar challenges.
