Carlos Yulo, the Filipino gymnast who previously told Vogue Philippines his plans for the 2024 Paris Olympics were “working so far”, has proven his words true. Over the weekend, Yulo dominated the competition, winning not one, but two gold medals for the Philippines.
His first gold came in the men’s artistic gymnastics floor exercise final at the Bercy Arena on Saturday, August 3rd. Yulo’s impressive performance earned him 15.000 points, surpassing Israel’s Artem Dolopyat, who took silver, and Great Britain’s Jake Jarman, who won bronze. This victory marks the second Olympic gold medal for the Philippines, following Hidilyn Diaz’s historic gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics. Yulo also became the first Filipino to win any medal in gymnastics at the Olympic Games.
One gold medal was already a cause for celebration, but Yulo continued his winning streak. He followed his first victory with another gold in the men’s artistic gymnastics vault final. The 24-year-old champion secured an average score of 15.116 points, scoring 15.333 in his first vault and 14.800 in his second. Armenia’s Artur Davtyan won silver with 14.966 points, and Great Britain’s Harry Hepworth secured bronze with 14.949 points.
Yulo’s impressive track record includes ten Asian championships, nine SEA Games championships, and six world championship medals. Now, with these two historic Olympic gold medals, he has achieved another milestone, becoming the first Filipino double Olympic gold medalist.
