Carlsen and Polgar Honored at FIDE 100 Awards, While Carlsen Acknowledges Kasparov’s Legacy

The prestigious FIDE 100 Awards ceremony in Hungary saw two chess titans, Magnus Carlsen and Judit Polgar, recognized as the best male and female players, respectively. Carlsen, currently holding the top spot in the world rankings, is representing Norway in the ongoing Chess Olympiad 2024. Despite the honor, Carlsen expressed a sense of humility, stating, “It feels strange to be receiving this award as an active player. Right now, I’m more concerned about Norway’s match against Vietnam.”

He went further, acknowledging the remarkable career of legendary grandmaster Garry Kasparov, stating his belief that Kasparov was “more deserving” of the award. “In my personal opinion, I still think Garry Kasparov has had a better career than I have. I understand why I got this award. I think he is more deserving. I would say on Garry’s behalf, I’m sure he would take the opportunity to advise against reinstating the Russian and Belarusian Chess Federations, so that is what I would do as well,” Carlsen added.

Carlsen has held the No. 1 position in the FIDE world chess rankings since July 1, 2011, a remarkable feat, trailing only Kasparov in time spent as the highest-rated player globally.

On the other hand, Polgar, a renowned chess player, announced her retirement from competitive chess in 2014. She reflected on her journey, expressing gratitude, “Without the inspirational people around me, starting from my parents, sister and trainers. And, of course, my opponents, who gave me the opportunity to win prizes and games and play interesting and adventurous games.”

Both Carlsen and Polgar stand as icons in the chess world, their accomplishments and contributions to the game deeply respected. Carlsen’s recognition while acknowledging Kasparov’s legacy adds another layer to the intricate tapestry of chess history, highlighting the ongoing dialogue and debates within the chess community.
