At an international ceremony this week, Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world’s largest cruise company, and its AIDA Cruises line were honored with three ESG Shipping Awards for their dedication to environmental excellence. The ESG Shipping Awards International 2024, a groundbreaking global event, was created in collaboration with the Ministry of Shipping and the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping.
The awards, given out in 11 categories, recognized companies in the global shipping industry that are leading the way in sustainability and responsible business practices.
“We are unwavering in our commitment to spearheading sustainable cruising and are immensely proud to be acknowledged for our significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and minimizing food waste across our operations,” said Bill Burke, chief maritime officer. “The programs recognized by the ESG Shipping Awards are a testament to the decisive actions we are taking to minimize our environmental footprint and strive towards achieving net zero GHG emissions by 2050.”
Carnival Corporation and AIDA Cruises were recognized in the following categories:
*
Carnival Corporation:
Top honors for its Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) program, a fuel technology it pioneered within the cruise industry as the most readily available option for immediate GHG reductions. The 10 LNG-capable ships currently in operation by Carnival Corporation, with three more slated for delivery, will collectively represent approximately 25% of its total fleet capacity by 2028. These ships are adaptable for renewable fuels when they become widely accessible. By investing in LNG-powered ships and implementing other climate action initiatives, the company has achieved a 10+% reduction in total GHG emissions compared to 2011, its peak historical year.*
AIDA Cruises:
Recognized for installing the largest lithium-ion battery energy storage system in passenger shipping on board AIDAprima, with a capacity of 10-megawatt hours. The technology, installed in 2022 and thoroughly tested in 2023, can provide energy to the ship and enable it to operate in a net-zero emission mode for limited periods. This next-generation battery storage system exemplifies AIDA’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions across its fleet.*
Carnival Corporation:
Awarded for its aggressive food waste reduction initiatives, aimed at minimizing unused food across all aspects of food preparation and dining services onboard. This includes investments in innovative food waste management technologies such as biodigesters and dehydrators, which naturally break down and responsibly dispose of unused food. Together, these strategies have helped reduce the company’s “foodprint” by over 40% per person compared to its 2019 baseline, surpassing the 2025 goal and building momentum towards the 50% reduction target set for 2030.These recognitions collectively underscore Carnival Corporation’s commitment to sustainability leadership and its ongoing efforts to reduce its environmental impact.
