Caroline Garcia, a two-time French Open doubles champion, has been chosen to represent France in the upcoming Paris Olympics. However, her regular doubles partner, Kristina Mladenovic, has been left out of the team. Garcia and Mladenovic triumphed together at Roland Garros, the Olympic venue next month, in both 2016 and 2022. Their most recent Grand Slam appearance as a duo came at the Australian Open, where they reached the quarterfinals. Notably, they haven’t played together on the tour since February.
Mladenovic, a former world No. 1 in doubles, has slipped to No. 55 in the rankings. She boasts nine Grand Slam doubles titles, including four French Open championships. Garcia, on the other hand, competed solely in singles at Roland Garros this month, exiting in the second round. For the Olympics, she will team up with Diane Parry for the doubles competition.
Joining Garcia in the women’s team are Clara Burel and Varvara Gracheva.
In the men’s doubles, Edouard Roger-Vaselin, who won the French Open mixed doubles this month, will partner with Fabien Reboul. Gael Monfils, who will be competing in his fourth Olympics, has also been selected. The 37-year-old Monfils achieved a quarterfinal finish at both the Beijing 2008 and Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics. Completing the men’s team are Ugo Humbert, Arthur Fils, and Corentin Moutet.
The Olympic tennis tournament is set to begin on July 27th.
