Carrie Coon’s Relaxed Emmy Experience: Family, Fashion, and Fawn Over Fellow Artists

Carrie Coon, nominated for her role as Bertha Russell in the HBO period drama ‘The Gilded Age,’ took a unique approach to the 2024 Emmy Awards. Instead of focusing on the glitz and glamour, she prioritized spending quality time with her family, turning the trip into a mini vacation.

“My husband and I left the kids in New York, so I slept nine hours,” she shared with Vogue, highlighting the rare opportunity for a peaceful night’s rest. “I can’t remember the last time we had the pleasure of sitting down to eat breakfast together and talk without interruption.”

This family-focused approach extended to the celebrations, with Coon’s parents and brother’s family visiting for the occasion. “It was fun to share the morning with them, surrounded by kids and breakfast chaos,” she said, adding a touch of humor to the celebratory atmosphere.

For the big night, Coon and her husband, fellow nominee Tracy Letts, opted for Thom Browne, a fitting choice given her recitation of “The Raven” for the designer’s fall 2024 show. Coon, nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, chose look 40 from Browne’s fall 2024 couture collection, a stunning off-white wool crepe and double duchess silk dress.

The gown, with its high collar, strong shoulders, and exaggerated hips, echoed elements of Browne’s signature tailoring, but also subtly resembled a deconstructed version of what her Gilded Age character might wear. “I love Thom Browne’s designs. Every detail is carefully considered and so thoroughly and beautifully realized,” Coon explained, expressing her admiration for the designer’s craftsmanship. “This piece from his 2024 Couture collection is both modern and timeless, with elements that give a sly nod to both Bertha Russell and menswear in the Gilded Age.”

Despite the grandeur of the event, the Emmy nominees, like many others, experience a dose of starstruck awe. “Tracy and I will go to a couple of parties and try and fawn over as many people as we can. One of the pleasures of the evening is telling other artists how much we enjoy their work,” Coon revealed. “We won’t dance the night away, though—we have a to catch an early flight and relieve the nanny!”

Carrie Coon’s approach to the Emmys embodies a balanced perspective—celebrating the achievements while prioritizing personal connections and family, making for a memorable and heartwarming experience.
