Casting Couch Allegations Surface in Tamil Film Industry: Actress Sanam Shetty Calls for Investigation

Actress Sanam Shetty has raised concerns about the presence of ‘casting couch’ incidents in the Tamil film industry, calling for a detailed investigation to ensure the safety of actors. She made these remarks during a visit to the Chennai police commissioner’s office on Tuesday. She was seeking permission to hold a rally near Valluvar Kottam to condemn the rape-murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.

She referenced the Justice K Hema Committee’s report on the prevalence of ‘casting couch’ in the Malayalam film industry, commending the Malayalam actors who came forward to share their experiences with the committee. Sanam Shetty emphasized that this rally is about women’s safety across India, expressing her condemnation of the sexual assault on a school student under the guise of an NCC camp at a private school in Krishnagiri.

Accompanied by G Uma Maheshwari, founder and managing trustee of Naveena Nangaiyar Foundation, and MS Singa Tamizhachi, general secretary of the organization, Sanam Shetty stated that the city police have requested them to suggest an alternative date for the rally.

Sanam Shetty’s statement highlights the growing concern about sexual harassment and exploitation within the entertainment industry, particularly in Tamil Nadu. Her call for a thorough investigation reflects the need for a safe and respectful environment for all actors, regardless of gender. The rally planned by Sanam Shetty and her team aims to raise awareness about women’s safety and to demand accountability for perpetrators of sexual violence.
