Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: Accused Civic Volunteer Had History of Violence Against Women

Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the brutal rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor in Kolkata, has a history of violence against women and multiple failed marriages. He was a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police and had access to several hospital departments. Roy’s mother-in-law alleged he was violent towards her daughter and concealed his previous marriages. He was also accused of running a hospital racket. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has promised a CBI investigation if the police fail to solve the case by Sunday.

School Food Services Director Sentenced to 9 Years for Stealing $1.5 Million in Chicken Wings

A former food services director at a school district in Illinois has been sentenced to nine years in prison for stealing over 11,000 cases of chicken wings worth $1.5 million, intended for students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vera Liddell, 68, used her position to arrange for the chicken wings and collect them using a school van. The theft was discovered during a routine audit when food expenses exceeded the budget by $300,000. The students never received the stolen food.

Gold Smuggling Attempt Foiled at Cochin Airport

Customs officials at Cochin International Airport seized 466.5 grams of gold concealed within a passenger’s shoes. The passenger arrived from Doha via Dubai and was intercepted at the airport’s exit gate. The gold, worth over ₹ 30 lakhs, was discovered hidden within the soles of his shoes. This incident follows a similar gold smuggling case at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport where 1,390.85 grams of gold were seized from a passenger arriving from Dubai.
