National rail strikes by train drivers will enter a third summer with a series of “rolling” walkouts, one region at a time, during May. The strikes aim to halt thousands of trains on May 7, 8, and 9, 2024, targeting commuters who typically travel to work on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The Rail Delivery Group (RDG), representing 14 rail firms in England, will be impacted by the disruptions. Additionally, six days of overtime bans from May 6 to 11 will cause further cancellations. The dispute between train drivers and rail firms stems from disagreements over pay and working arrangements, with drivers demanding a pay increase to address inflation and rail firms seeking changes to working practices to reduce costs.
Letters written by the late Everest mountaineer George Mallory have been digitized and made available to a global audience for the first time, offering a glimpse into the life of the famous Magdalene alumnus. The letters, which survived 75 years in his jacket pocket before his body was discovered, include correspondence between Mallory and his wife Ruth, as well as letters retrieved from his body in 1999. The letters cover fascinating topics, including his first reconnaissance mission to Everest in 1921 and his final Everest summit attempt in 1924.
Budget airline Ryanair has issued a warning to British tourists that digital boarding passes won’t be accepted at all airports it flies to. The airline spokesperson said that while mobile boarding passes are accepted on flights from the majority of airports, there are some exceptions. Currently, airports in Turkey, Morocco, and Tirana Airport in Albania are unable to accept mobile boarding passes. Passengers traveling from these airports must check-in online and print out a paper boarding pass for their flight(s) or may face additional charges.
