CATL Takes a Leading Role in Battery Transparency with Global Battery Alliance’s Battery Passport Pilot Program
The Global Battery Alliance (GBA) has announced the successful completion of its 2024 Battery Passport pilot projects, a significant milestone in the quest for greater transparency and sustainability in the battery industry. Ten consortia, led by key battery cell manufacturers worldwide, collaborated in this pre-competitive effort to develop a harmonized battery passport. As a member of the GBA, CATL spearheaded two pilot projects for its Shenxing and CTP batteries, solidifying its commitment to a more sustainable and transparent battery value chain.
This initiative builds upon the initial concept of a battery passport, unveiled in Davos, Switzerland, at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in January 2023. In 2024, the consortia, including CATL, worked with seven digital solution providers to trace the origin and flow of seven critical materials: lithium, graphite (synthetic), aluminum, cobalt, copper, iron phosphate, and nickel. This process, aligned with existing regulations and voluntary standards, led to the development of seven regulations through a multi-stakeholder process, encompassing areas such as Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Biodiversity, and Circular Design.
CATL, as a pioneer in this endeavor, shared its results from both pilot projects with independent data verification, showcasing its dedication to providing sustainable and high-quality battery solutions. With a global carbon footprint of 49 kgCO2eq/kwh for both projects, CATL demonstrated its commitment to reducing emissions throughout the battery lifecycle. The positive outcomes across all battery passport criteria underscore CATL’s commitment to transparency, traceability, and environmental responsibility.
Inga Petersen, Executive Director of the GBA, expressed her enthusiasm about the results: “We are thrilled with the outcomes of the 2024 Battery Passport pilot projects and applaud all participating organizations for this important achievement. To have leading battery manufacturers globally mobilize their supply chains, work pre-competitively, and report on harmonized sustainability expectations, represents an unprecedented commitment to greater transparency and sustainability in the battery sector, as outlined in the GBA’s 2030 Vision.”
Jiang Li, Vice President and Secretary of the Board at CATL, highlighted the crucial role of collaboration in shaping the future of the battery industry: “The future of the battery industry lies in collaboration to ensure sustainability and circularity. CATL is proud to be at the forefront of these efforts. Through our participation in the Battery Passport initiative and our active engagement in the GBA, we are shaping a more sustainable future for the battery industry.”
Beyond the Battery Passport, CATL continues to actively contribute to the development of industry standards and best practices. The company’s nine carbon-neutral factories and innovative tools like CCMS and CREDIT underscore its dedication to minimizing its environmental footprint. This initiative aligns with CATL’s sustainable development vision, promoting transparency in product carbon footprints and ESG performance. By participating in the development and promotion of the GBA’s Battery Passport, CATL aims to contribute to establishing global standards for battery industry sustainability, bridging regulatory gaps, and fostering a greener future.
CATL’s commitment to transparency, sustainability, and collaboration reinforces its position as a leader in the battery industry, driving positive change towards a more sustainable future.
