CATL Takes a Leading Role in Sustainable Battery Production with Battery Passport Pilots
The Global Battery Alliance (GBA) has announced the successful completion of its 2024 Battery Passport pilots, a significant milestone in the quest for a more sustainable and transparent battery industry. The initiative, which involved ten consortia led by global battery cell manufacturers, aimed to establish a harmonized battery passport, providing a clear picture of the battery’s origins, materials, and environmental impact.
As a key member of the GBA, CATL played a crucial role in this endeavor. The company led two pilot projects, focusing on its Shenxing and CTP batteries, showcasing its commitment to transparency and sustainability. CATL’s efforts involved tracking seven key materials – lithium, graphite, aluminum, cobalt, copper, iron phosphate, and nickel – throughout their lifecycle, providing a comprehensive understanding of their journey from source to final product.
Building upon the initial proof of concept launched in Davos in 2023, the GBA worked with seven digital solution providers to create a standardized Battery Passport system. This system includes seven rulebooks covering various sustainability aspects, including Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Biodiversity, and Circular Design, ensuring alignment with existing regulations and voluntary standards.
CATL’s participation in the Battery Passport pilot projects has been highly successful. The company was one of the first to share its results, including data verification by independent agencies, demonstrating its dedication to open and honest practices. The pilot projects revealed that CATL’s batteries have an overall carbon footprint of 49 kgCO2eq/kwh, highlighting the company’s commitment to minimizing its environmental impact.
A Commitment to Transparency and Sustainability
The successful completion of these pilot projects reinforces CATL’s position as a leader in sustainable battery production. The company’s participation in the GBA’s Battery Passport initiative demonstrates its commitment to transparency, traceability, and environmental responsibility. By prioritizing sustainability, CATL aims to not only deliver high-quality battery solutions to its customers but also contribute to a greener future.
CATL’s dedication to sustainable practices extends beyond the Battery Passport initiative. The company has nine carbon-neutral factories and employs innovative tools like CCMS and CREDIT to continuously reduce its environmental footprint. These efforts demonstrate CATL’s commitment to sustainable development, which is reflected in its vision to promote transparency in its product carbon footprint and ESG performance.
Shaping the Future of the Battery Industry
Inga Petersen, Executive Director of the GBA, expressed her enthusiasm for the success of the Battery Passport pilots, stating, “We are thrilled with the results of the 2024 Battery Passport pilots and congratulate all participating organisations for this major achievement. Having the world’s leading cell manufacturers mobilize their supply chains, work pre-competitively and report on harmonized sustainability expectations represents an unprecedented commitment to greater transparency and sustainability in the battery industry as captured in the 2030 GBA Vision.”
Jiang Li, Vice President and Board Secretary of CATL, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in shaping a sustainable future for the battery industry. “The future of the battery industry lies in collaborative efforts to ensure sustainability and circularity. CATL is proud to be at the forefront of these efforts. Through our participation in the Battery Passport initiative and our active engagement in the GBA, we are shaping a more sustainable future for the battery sector.”
By actively participating in the development and advocacy of the GBA’s Battery Passport, CATL is contributing to the establishment of global standards for battery industry sustainability. This initiative is bridging regulatory gaps and fostering a greener future for the industry. Through its leadership and commitment to sustainable practices, CATL is playing a pivotal role in shaping a more responsible and transparent battery industry.
