Los Angeles Clippers broadcaster Ralph Lawler once proposed Lawler’s Law, suggesting that the first team to reach 100 points in an NBA game would emerge victorious.
In the ongoing first-round series between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic, that target has proven elusive. Nonetheless, the Cavs secured a 2-0 lead by defending their home court with a 96-86 triumph.
The Cavs’ victory was driven by a collective effort from their four key players: Jarrett Allen, Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, and Evan Mobley. The strategy behind assembling this group was to maximize their complementary skills, particularly as Garland and Mobley continue their development in the league. Monday night’s game showcased the potential of this vision.
Mitchell led the scoring, as he often does, with 23 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and one steal and block. Garland provided solid support, contributing 15 points and four assists.
Both Allen and Mobley dominated the Magic’s frontcourt, with the veteran Allen proving particularly effective. Allen amassed 16 points and 20 rebounds, nine of which came on the offensive glass. Mobley contributed 17 points and seven rebounds.
For the second consecutive game, the Cavaliers’ success stemmed from their impressive defense, which was aided by the Magic’s offensive struggles. Orlando shot a dismal 29-for-80 (36.3%) from the field and 9-for-35 (25.7%) from three-point range. Paolo Banchero (21 points) and Franz Wagner (18 points) led the Magic in scoring but struggled with efficiency and turnovers.
Orlando’s glimmer of hope lies in the improved three-point shooting of Gary Harris, who made four of seven attempts from beyond the arc. Wagner, who hit two triples, was the only other Magic player to convert more than one three-pointer.
The series now moves to Orlando’s Kia Center for Games 3 and 4, marking the Magic’s first home playoff game since 2019. Game 3 is scheduled for Thursday night at 7 p.m. EST on NBA TV.
