CBI Denies Bail to Former RG Kar Medical College Principal in Kolkata Doctor Rape Case

A designated CBI court in Kolkata has refused bail to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Ghosh faces serious allegations of tampering with evidence and delaying the filing of an FIR in the brutal rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor. The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, S Dey, emphasized the gravity of the accusations, stating that if found guilty, Ghosh could potentially face the death penalty – a punishment typically reserved for the most heinous crimes.

The CBI alleges that Ghosh, along with former Tala police station officer Abhijit Mondal, manipulated evidence and hindered the investigation. The agency’s investigation uncovered “falsely created” and “altered” records related to the case at the Tala police station. This manipulation, according to the CBI, involved both Ghosh and Mondal. To solidify their case, the agency has seized CCTV footage from the police station for forensic examination.

The CBI’s allegations stem from their interrogation of both Ghosh and Mondal. New information emerged during the investigation, indicating that records related to the case were manipulated at the Tala police station. Both Ghosh and Mondal were brought before the court after completing their remand period.

The CBI also alleges that there was a significant delay in seizing critical evidence, such as the clothing of Sanjoy Roy, a key suspect in the case. Roy was arrested on August 10, just a day after the horrific crime. The delay in gathering this vital evidence could have potentially hampered the investigation.

The tragic incident unfolded on August 9th, when the postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College during her night shift. Her body, discovered by another doctor, displayed severe injuries and evidence of a brutal attack. CCTV footage captured Sanjoy Roy entering the seminar hall around 4:03 am on the night of the incident.

In response to the severity of the case, the Calcutta High Court on August 13th ordered the transfer of the investigation from Kolkata Police to the CBI. The CBI took over the case on August 14th and is currently investigating potential criminal conspiracies involving Sanjoy Roy, Sandip Ghosh, and Abhijit Mondal. The denial of bail to Sandip Ghosh reflects the seriousness of the allegations and highlights the ongoing investigation by the CBI into this horrific crime.
