The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is intensifying its investigation into the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The agency is specifically focusing on the role of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the institution.
Ghosh has been summoned by the CBI for questioning on multiple occasions. He was grilled for over 13 hours on Saturday and Sunday, and the CBI is keen on examining his phone records, including call details and text messages. The investigation aims to determine if Ghosh was involved in any attempt to portray the doctor’s death as a suicide.
The CBI is also scrutinizing the renovation work that was undertaken at the hospital following the incident. The agency is looking into whether this work was done hastily and with the intent to tamper with potential evidence.
Ghosh has maintained his innocence, stating that he has not been arrested and that he was not questioned about the main accused, Sanjay Roy. However, the family of the deceased doctor has expressed concerns that their daughter may have been silenced to protect someone influential.
Ghosh resigned from his post two days after the doctor’s body was found but was promptly reinstated as the principal of another state-run medical college. He subsequently sought protection from the Calcutta High Court, citing fears of being attacked.
The CBI’s investigation is focused on understanding the events leading up to the doctor’s death, including Ghosh’s actions after receiving news of the incident. They are examining his communication with others and investigating why he made the doctor’s parents wait for nearly three hours.
The agency is also questioning Ghosh’s involvement in the decision to renovate the rooms near the seminar hall where the doctor’s body was found. The CBI’s primary objective is to determine whether there was any conspiracy or pre-planning involved in the crime and whether Ghosh played any part in it. The agency is further verifying Ghosh’s statements with accounts from other doctors and interns who were on duty at the time of the incident.
