The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), responsible for setting educational standards for higher secondary education in India, has published the Senior Secondary Curriculum for the academic year 2024-25. The curriculum, designed for Classes 11 and 12, aims to enhance students’ capabilities and equip them with essential knowledge and skills. The curriculum covers seven key learning areas: Languages, Humanities, Mathematics, Sciences, Skill Subjects, General Studies, and Health and Physical Education. These areas are further categorized into compulsory subjects and electives, providing students with a comprehensive and balanced education. For Classes 11 and 12, a unified course structure is followed. Students must select subjects in Class 11 that they intend to continue in Class 12. A minimum of five subjects is required, which must be pursued in both classes. Regarding language subjects, students are mandated to study either Hindi or English as one of their two language courses. English can be taken as English Core (Code-301) or English Elective (Code-001), while Hindi can be opted for as Hindi Core (Code-302) or Hindi Elective (Code-002). It is not permissible to choose the same language at both core and elective levels. The curriculum also emphasizes the role of State Boards in determining textbooks for regional languages in Classes 11 and 12. Schools are instructed to inform CBSE of any changes made by State Boards at the beginning of the academic year. CBSE-mandated textbooks are to be strictly followed by schools, with any deviations subject to CBSE approval. Schools are held responsible for any issues arising from non-compliance with CBSE guidelines.
