CCTV Footage Links Suspect to Kolkata Doctor’s Murder, Supreme Court Acts to Ensure Safety of Medical Professionals

The investigation into the horrifying rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has taken a significant turn with the emergence of CCTV footage placing Sanjay Roy, a suspect in the case, at the scene of the crime.

According to reports from CNN-News18, the footage shows Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer with access to the hospital, observing the victim and even glaring at the camera. During interrogation, Roy confessed to having seen the 31-year-old victim in the chest medicine ward on August 8, the day before the attack. This confession aligns with the CCTV evidence. CBI sources describe Roy as a “sexual pervert” with “animal-like instincts” and noted that he showed no remorse during questioning.

In response to this tragic incident, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter and formed a National Task Force to recommend guidelines aimed at ensuring the safety of medical professionals across the country. The CBI is currently leading the investigation into the doctor’s murder.

Following an appeal from the Supreme Court, health professionals at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, ended their 11-day strike and resumed their duties on Thursday. The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) announced the decision, stating: “In the interest of the nation and public service, the RDA, AIIMS, New Delhi, has decided to end the 11-day strike. This decision follows the Supreme Court’s appeal and direction. We sincerely thank the Supreme Court for addressing the RG Kar Medical College incident and the broader safety and security issue for healthcare workers nationwide.”

The Supreme Court, while hearing the Kolkata doctor rape and murder case, had earlier instructed health professionals to return to work, assuring them that no adverse action would be taken against them upon their return.

The murder of the junior doctor in Kolkata on August 9 sparked widespread protests and strikes by the medical community across the country, highlighting the pressing need for improved safety measures for healthcare professionals. The Supreme Court has also requested the CBI to provide a status report on the investigation and has asked the West Bengal government to submit a report on the mob attack at RG Kar Hospital on August 15.
