Celebrate the Value of State Parks: ‘I Love My State Parks Week’ Returns May 12-19

The Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation (PPFF) and the National Association of State Park Foundations (NASPF) are teaming up to celebrate “I Love My State Parks Week,” a nationwide event showcasing the valuable contributions of state parks to both the economy and community wellness.

Every year, state parks across the U.S. attract more than 809 million visitors, generating upwards of $100 billion for local and state economies. In 2023, nearly 40 million of those visits occurred in Pennsylvania’s state parks, which added over $14 billion to the state’s GDP.

State parks also provide a wealth of outdoor activities that are crucial for enhancing physical, mental, and emotional health. The PPFF has produced a video series highlighting how engaging with nature can help manage heart rate, lower blood pressure, and improve social connections and self-esteem.

Launched by NASPF in 2022, “I Love My State Parks Week” is designed to raise awareness of the many benefits of state parks, encouraging public participation and support for these natural resources. From May 12 to May 19, 2024, over 8,500 state parks across the country will host a variety of events.

“Our state parks are among the world’s finest, offering diverse opportunities for everyone,” said Damon Kirkpatrick, NASPF President. “We invite new audiences to explore and appreciate these treasures.”

To join in, check out the PPFF events calendar for details on the “I Love My State Park Week” activities, including the highlight event on May 14, 2024, at Little Buffalo State Park in Newport, PA, where thirteen honorees will be recognized for their commitment to park stewardship across ten different categories.

Participants are encouraged to share their state park adventures on social media using the hashtag #ILoveMyStateParksWeek and to stay updated by following NASPF, PPFF, and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). Additionally, NASPF offers various resources, such as a social media toolkit and themed daily toolkits, available on their website.

“I Love My State Park Week is an opportunity to express gratitude for our state parks and their caretakers,” said Marci Mowery, PPFF President. “Join us in celebrating these invaluable public spaces and consider volunteering year-round to support Pennsylvania state parks.”
