Celine Dion Debuts Documentary Chronicling Her Battle with Stiff-Person Syndrome

Celine Dion, who has made few public appearances since revealing her diagnosis with Stiff-Person Syndrome in 2022, graced the red carpet in New York City for the premiere of her highly anticipated Prime Video documentary, ‘I Am: Celine Dion.’ The film offers an intimate look into her battle with the rare neurological disorder.

Dion delivered a moving speech at the premiere, held at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, expressing her gratitude to the guests, including Gayle King and Laverne Cox. “This is by far the biggest crowd I’ve had in a few years,” she said, radiating joy and appreciation. “I’m so proud to be here tonight to share this film with you.”

The singer, who hasn’t performed since 2020, spoke candidly about the emotional journey she’s been through. She thanked documentary director Irene Taylor Brodsky and her neurologist, Dr. Amanda Piquet, for their instrumental role in helping her understand and manage her condition. “She has replaced my fear with hope,” Dion shared, highlighting the profound impact of Dr. Piquet’s expertise.

Dion also expressed immense love and gratitude for her family, particularly her 23-year-old son, René-Charles, and her 13-year-old twins, Nelson and Eddy. When she addressed her devoted fans, tears welled up in her eyes, symbolizing the deep connection she shares with them. “Thank you to all of you from the bottom of my heart for being part of my journey. This movie is my love letter to each of you. I hope to see you all again very soon,” she concluded, receiving thunderous applause and a standing ovation.

Prior to the screening, Dion spoke to Vanity Fair about her unwavering determination and resilience in the face of adversity. She emphasized her commitment to overcoming the challenges posed by Stiff-Person Syndrome, particularly for her children. “When life imposes something on you, you have two options: You deal with it, or you don’t. I want to deal with it because I am a mother. I have three magnificent kids, and the biggest responsibility for me is to fight for them and to tell them that mom has a condition, but mom is fine. And that is what keeps me positive,” she revealed, showcasing her unwavering maternal love.

Dion described her current condition as “good” thanks to extensive rehabilitation. “It’s five days a week. Sometimes we push it even further because I’m getting ready to perform,” she said, emphasizing her dedication to her craft. “My passion as a performer will never disappear. So I am training, rehabilitating myself.”

The legendary singer is working tirelessly to regain her vocal prowess, determined to return to the stage. “I will sing again. That’s for sure,” she asserted with unwavering confidence.

With the release of her documentary, Dion hopes to raise awareness about Stiff-Person Syndrome, a condition that can significantly impact daily life. She also wants to reassure her fans that she never abandoned them. “I’ve been so much about ‘the show must go on, I’m so strong, everything is okay, no problem,’ and I couldn’t do this anymore. I was like, ‘Yes, the show will still go on, but you will know why I was not there yesterday and last year.’ My fans deserve to know why. I did not turn my back on them, and I want this documentary to tell the world and my fans the reasons why I have been away.”

‘I Am: Celine Dion’ is set to premiere on Prime Video on June 25th, offering viewers an intimate glimpse into the life and career of a music icon.
