Celtics’ Three-Point Arsenal Challenges Heat’s Zone Defense

In the playoffs, where tempo slows and half-court execution becomes crucial, the Miami Heat’s aggressive defense and zone coverage have often stifled their opponents. However, the Boston Celtics’ three-point prowess is proving to be a major challenge for Miami’s defensive scheme.

The Celtics ranked first in the league during the regular season with 42.5 three-point attempts per game, significantly more than any other team. Their eight-player rotation in Game 1 against Miami showcased their collective shooting ability, with each player making at least two three-pointers, except for Grant Williams.

Boston’s three-point arsenal is particularly effective against Miami’s zone defense. Whether the Heat deploy a 2-3 or 3-2 zone, the Celtics have found open shots from above the break and in the corners. In Game 1, Sam Hauser drained four three-pointers from the short corners.

To counter the Celtics’ three-point threat, the Heat must improve their defensive rotations and closeout control. They cannot allow Boston to shoot at a high percentage from beyond the arc. Additionally, Miami’s physical defenders, such as Caleb Martin and Delon Wright, will need to step up and guard the Celtics’ perimeter players effectively.

Despite their reliance on three-pointers, the Celtics emphasize their ability to score in various ways. Jrue Holiday stated, “We’re not just a 3PT shooting team. A lot of players are getting to the paint, a lot of players can finish at the basket, we have mid-range players … we can go off in any facet … if they try to take away the 3, I think we have counters.”

With Jimmy Butler sidelined due to injury, the Heat may opt for a more traditional man-to-man defensive approach. Caleb Martin and Delon Wright’s versatility could prove vital in containing the Celtics’ perimeter attack. The chess match between Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra and Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla will continue in Game 2, with Miami seeking to adjust their defense and Boston hoping to capitalize on their shooting prowess.
