Central Michigan University Appoints Former Standout Wrestler Ben Bennett as Head Coach

Ben Bennett, a former standout wrestler at Central Michigan University, has been appointed as the Chippewas’ new wrestling head coach. Bennett, a four-time All-American grappler, spent the previous 11 years as an assistant under Tom Borrelli, who retired after 33 years at the helm.

Bennett, a three-time state champion at Rockford High School, expressed his excitement about the opportunity to lead the CMU wrestling program, fulfilling a dream he has held since middle school. He praised his experience under Borrelli and emphasized his belief that CMU provides the best environment for his growth as a head coach.

As associate head coach in the 2022-23 season, Bennett contributed to the Chippewas’ 8-8 record in dual meets and their victory at the Mid-American Conference Championships. He will now lead a team with experienced wrestlers, including Johnny Lovett, Alex Cramer, and Corbyn Munson, who qualified for the NCAA Championships this season.

Bennett’s impressive collegiate wrestling career saw him place fourth in the 184-pound weight class as a senior at the NCAA Championships. He also earned the Chick Sherwood Award twice as CMU’s most valuable wrestler and was named the MAC Wrestler of the Year in 2012. With a 121-24 record at CMU, he ranks seventh in program history for wins and fourth for win percentage.

Bennett’s appointment signifies a new era for CMU wrestling, with the former All-American grappler and dedicated assistant coach bringing his expertise and passion to the program. As the sixth head coach in CMU wrestling history, Bennett is poised to lead the Chippewas to continued success on the mat.
