The Canadian Football League (CFL) has taken significant steps to enhance player safety with a range of new initiatives for the upcoming season.
Beginning this season, players will have the option to wear Guardian caps, a type of protective soft-shell helmet cover, during games. This measure was previously mandated during training camp and contact practices, but is now extended to include all game situations for offensive and defensive linemen, running backs, linebackers, defensive backs, and receivers. The introduction of Guardian caps last year reportedly led to a 42% decrease in training camp concussions.
In a historic move, the CFL has also made mouthguards mandatory for all players, becoming the first professional sports league in North America to do so. Violations of this rule will result in fines rather than in-game penalties.
Additionally, the league will implement GPS tracking technology for all teams throughout the 2024 season, including training camp, the regular season, and playoffs. These devices will collect real-time data on player movements, such as speed, G-force, location, acceleration, and deceleration. This information will assist in injury prevention, load management, and rehabilitation monitoring.
CFL teams will also benefit from professional development meetings with strength and conditioning staff and the addition of a new injury spotter to the command center this season, along with expanded camera angles and video technology for injury surveillance.
