Chandigarh, the planned city in India, is on a mission to transform itself into a leading tourist destination. The Union Territory administration has announced plans to establish several cultural and entertainment hubs across the city, aiming to attract visitors from across the country and beyond.
These ambitious projects are set to be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, bringing together resources from both the government and private sectors. The initiative is driven by the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme, which promotes holistic development of tourist destinations in India. The scheme’s focus is on creating immersive experiences for visitors, leveraging technology to enhance their engagement.
One of the key projects is the development of a prominent 11-storey tower in Sector 17. This iconic structure, originally envisioned by renowned architect Le Corbusier, will be a landmark, offering 500,000 square feet of commercial space spread across two blocks. The tower will be situated at the intersection of two major pedestrian piazzas, fulfilling Le Corbusier’s vision of Sector 17 as the heart of Chandigarh’s commercial and cultural life.
In Sector 34, the Nehru Centre for Performing Arts is set to be constructed on 12.8 acres. This facility will include two theatres, a convention center, food courts, a library, and an outdoor terrace cafe, designed to revitalize social life in the area. The center is envisioned as a cultural landmark, bringing vibrancy to public spaces.
Sector 31 will be home to the Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre, strategically located near industrial zones, the airport, and major trade organizations. Spanning 5.5 acres, the facility will host trade fairs, exhibitions, conferences, and more, elevating Chandigarh to a premier national convention hub. The project is expected to stimulate the growth of ancillary businesses such as hotels, tourism, and trade, making it a key player in regional economic development.
Finally, an amusement park modeled after Disneyland is planned for the Sarangpur Institutional Area. This sprawling 40-acre park will be a major attraction for both locals and tourists, further solidifying Chandigarh’s reputation as a destination for entertainment and family-friendly activities.
These developments are set to transform Chandigarh into a vibrant, culturally rich city, offering world-class entertainment and convention facilities that will attract visitors from across India and beyond. The city’s focus on technology, cultural heritage, and modern infrastructure is expected to make it a leading destination for leisure, business, and entertainment in the coming years.
