Kartik Aaryan’s new film, Chandu Champion, a biographical sports drama based on the life of India’s first Paralympic gold medalist, Murlikant Petkar, has had a slow start at the box office. The film, which released on June 14th, collected ₹ 4.75 crore on its opening day. However, these numbers are significantly lower than director Kabir Khan’s previous films, including Ek Tha Tiger, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and Phantom.
Chandu Champion’s box office performance continued to be underwhelming in the following days. The film earned ₹ 3.25 crore on its fifth day, bringing its total net collection in India to ₹ 29.75 crore. While the movie has managed to pass the Monday test by collecting ₹ 5 crore, exceeding its opening day earnings, it still faces a long road to break even. The film was reportedly made with a budget of ₹ 120 crore.
The movie has also struggled to generate significant overseas revenue, earning ₹ 7.5 crore from the international market. The total collection after five days stands at ₹ 39 crore.
Kartik Aaryan has been a bankable box office star since his breakout role in Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety in 2018. However, his recent films, including Love Aaj Kal and Shehzada, have not performed as well at the box office. His last release, Satyaprem Ki Katha, did moderately well, but Chandu Champion’s slow start suggests that Aaryan might be facing a tougher time at the box office in the future.
It remains to be seen whether Chandu Champion can overcome its slow start and gain momentum in the coming weeks. The film will need to significantly improve its box office performance to recover its budget and become a commercial success.
