After a limited release to Plus subscribers last month, the ChatGPT app is now open to everyone using macOS, as long as you have the Sonoma operating system installed on an Apple Silicon device. This native app allows you to seamlessly access ChatGPT by simply pressing Option+Space, mirroring the functionality of the built-in Copilot key on newer Windows laptops. This action brings up a bar for typing in your question and opens the app to display the answer. You can also upload files, photos, or even take a screenshot directly within the app. However, to use the screenshot feature, you’ll need to grant the app permission to record content from your screen, similar to how Microsoft’s Recall function works.
Just like the mobile app, the macOS version enables you to interact with ChatGPT through voice commands. This allows you to continue typing in one window while simultaneously utilizing ChatGPT in another. This unique capability, despite the abundance of virtual assistants throughout the years, has never been fully realized until now.
Apple and OpenAI have joined forces to develop Apple Intelligence, but Apple isn’t the only prominent partner for OpenAI. Microsoft has been a long-term investor in OpenAI since its early days. However, if you’re hoping to use the app on your Windows machine, you’ll be disappointed. While OpenAI has expressed plans to expand access to other platforms, there’s no confirmed timeline for a Windows app release.
The ChatGPT Mac app is readily available for download directly from the OpenAI website. Be cautious when searching for the app on the Mac App Store, as it’s filled with questionable knock-off applications.
