In a thrilling encounter at Prenton Park, Chelsea and Liverpool played out an entertaining 1-1 draw in the Women’s Super League. Chelsea took the lead early on through a stunning strike from Sam Kerr, but Liverpool responded quickly with a goal from Katie Stengel. Both teams continued to push for the win in the second half, but neither could find a breakthrough.
Chelsea started the brighter of the two sides and took the lead in the 10th minute. A long ball over the top found Kerr, who took a touch to control the ball before firing a powerful shot into the top corner. Liverpool responded well to going behind and equalized just six minutes later. Stengel was played through on goal and made no mistake with her finish.
The second half was just as entertaining as the first, with both teams creating chances. Chelsea came close to retaking the lead on several occasions, but Liverpool goalkeeper Rachael Laws was in inspired form and made several key saves. Liverpool also had their chances to win the game, but they were unable to find a way past Chelsea goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.
The result leaves Chelsea in second place in the WSL standings, two points behind leaders Arsenal. Liverpool remains in fifth place, five points behind Chelsea.
Chelsea manager Emma Hayes was pleased with her team’s performance, saying: ‘I thought we played really well today. We created a lot of chances and we were unlucky not to win the game. But credit to Liverpool, they played well and made it difficult for us.’
Liverpool manager Matt Beard was also happy with his team’s performance, saying: ‘I thought we were excellent today. We showed great character to come back from a goal down and we created some good chances of our own. We’re disappointed not to win the game, but we can take a lot of positives from this performance.’
