Chelsea Eye Leipzig’s Lukeba as Defensive Reinforcements

Chelsea have reportedly contacted Leipzig regarding a possible move for highly-rated defender Mohamed Simakan Lukeba next season, as they seek to address their defensive frailties. Lukeba’s impressive performances for Leipzig have earned him admirers, including Manchester United. The Frenchman, who joined Leipzig from Lyon in the summer for £30m, has been a key player for Marco Rose’s side, featuring in 37 matches across all competitions. Chelsea’s defensive struggles were evident in their 5-0 defeat to Arsenal, and they have conceded 57 goals in the Premier League this season, a club record. The Blues are expected to lose Thiago Silva at the end of the season, while Trevoh Chalobah could also be sold. However, Leipzig are reluctant to part ways with Lukeba, who has a €70m release clause in his contract that becomes active at the end of the 2024-25 campaign. Chelsea could face competition from Manchester United for Lukeba’s signature, with the Red Devils also reportedly interested in the young center-back.
