Chelsea Part Ways with Manager Mauricio Pochettino After One Year
Mauricio Pochettino has left Chelsea by mutual consent after a disappointing season in which the club failed to secure qualification for the Champions League.
Pochettino spent just one season as manager at Stamford Bridge and endured a troubled campaign. Chelsea finished sixth in the Premier League standings, were a beaten finalist in the English League Cup, and reached the semifinals of the FA Cup.
The club issued a statement thanking Pochettino for his service and wishing him well in his future coaching career. Pochettino, in turn, thanked the Chelsea ownership group and sporting directors for the opportunity to manage the club.
Pochettino’s departure comes after a season of heavy spending by Chelsea. The club has spent around $1 billion on transfers under new owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, but that has not translated into success on the field.
Pochettino was unable to end his search for a first trophy in English soccer after spells with Southampton and Tottenham previously. His coaching team of Jesus Perez, Miguel d’Agostino, Toni Jimenez, and Sebastiano Pochettino also left, Chelsea said.
