Cheney Warns Supreme Court: Rule Swiftly on Trump’s Immunity Claim

Former Republican Representative Liz Cheney has issued a stern warning to the Supreme Court over former President Donald Trump’s claim of presidential immunity.

Cheney, who has been among the most prominent GOP critics of Trump, served on the committee that investigated the January 6th Capitol riot in detail. In December 2022, the committee published an 845-page report that said Trump was personally responsible for the riot and obstruction of justice.

In an opinion piece published on Monday, Cheney discusses Trump’s presidential immunity claim and warns the Supreme Court to conclude their decision on the issue with no delay. She argues that if the court does not resolve the issue quickly, the public may never hear critical evidence about Trump’s role in the Capitol riot.

Cheney also notes that Trump has a history of using delay tactics to avoid accountability. She points to the committee’s experience in litigating Trump’s privilege claims before gaining access to White House records.

Cheney’s comments come after Trump took to Truth Social, his social media platform, to focus on his presidential immunity claim. Trump has argued that if his immunity is taken away, so should President Joe Biden’s.

Meanwhile, Judge Juan Merchan has excused Trump from his criminal hush money trial to attend Thursday’s Supreme Court hearing on his presidential immunity defense.
