Chennai Braces for Heavy Rains as IMD Issues ‘Nowcast’ Alert for Five Districts

Chennai residents are bracing for a deluge as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘nowcast rain alert’ for five districts in Tamil Nadu. The alert covers Poonamallee, Sholinganallur, Thiruporur, Vandalur, and Tambaram, signifying a high likelihood of heavy rainfall in these areas.

According to the IMD, the city is expected to experience heavy rain over the next two to three days. The weather department has forecast ‘isolated heavy rainfall’ in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on October 18, 20, and 21.

The IMD has also issued warnings for other regions. South interior Karnataka is expected to see precipitation until October 22, while Kerala and Mahe are predicted to receive rainfall on October 22 and 23.

In a significant development, an orange alert has been issued for Chennai today. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai anticipates ‘partly cloudy sky with possibility of moderate rain or thunderstorm’ throughout the day. While the maximum temperature is expected to reach around 34 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature is likely to hover around 24 degrees Celsius.

Given the forecast, residents of Chennai and surrounding areas are advised to stay informed about the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions. The IMD’s ‘nowcast rain alert’ system provides real-time updates on rainfall activity, enabling people to plan accordingly and ensure their safety.
