Chennai Flooded: Torrential Rains Cause Chaos, Government Urges Remote Work

Chennai and various regions of Tamil Nadu are facing a severe weather crisis as torrential rains continue to lash the state, leading to widespread waterlogging, severe traffic jams, and major disruptions in public transportation.

The heavy downpour on Tuesday, October 16, has turned residential areas and roads into rivers of water, causing significant traffic snarls and disrupting public transportation services. Bus operations have been severely affected in many areas, while Southern Railway was forced to cancel four express trains, including the Chennai Central-Mysuru Kaveri Express, due to waterlogged tracks.

The impact of the flooding has extended to air travel as well. Several domestic flights were canceled due to a lack of passengers, as many chose to stay home due to the severe weather conditions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the state will continue to experience further rainfall over the next two days. A weather bulletin issued on October 16 warned of “heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy showers” expected over Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Chennai districts.

In response to the ongoing crisis, the government has urged private companies to allow employees to work from home to ensure their safety and minimize commuting challenges during the adverse weather conditions. Chief Minister MK Stalin has commended the efforts of sanitary and civic workers, as well as officials, for their dedication in assisting the public despite the ongoing heavy rains, pledging his full support to frontline workers.

The government is closely monitoring the situation and has deployed emergency services to assist those affected by the floods. The public is advised to take necessary precautions and stay safe during this challenging period.
