The Guindy Children’s Park in Chennai has reopened to the public after a 14-month renovation project. Chief Minister M K Stalin officially unveiled the revamped park on Saturday, marking the end of a period of closure since June 2023. The renovation project, costing Rs 30 crore, included Rs 10 crore from corporate social responsibility funds. The park now boasts a range of new features, including a double-dome 30,000 sq ft aviary, where birds can fly as high as 50 ft.
The park’s animal enclosures have also been revamped. The ungulate enclosures on the left side of the park now house spotted deer, black buck, and sambar deer. A new enclosure for gharial (Gangetic crocodiles) has also been added. To cater to visitors, the park now has two cafeterias – one outside the park near the parking area and another located inside. For those seeking knowledge and entertainment, the park features a mini library stocked with over 500 wildlife books for children and adults. This air-conditioned library will be a welcome respite, especially during the summer months.
The park’s landscaping has also been improved, with nearly half of the total 22 acres planted with endemic grass species. To facilitate easy movement around the park, paved paths have been created, and golf carts will also be available. Zoo director and additional principal chief conservator of forests Ashish Srivastava highlighted these features, emphasizing the park’s renewed appeal and offerings.
