The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Agency (CUMTA) is developing a draft motor vehicle parking policy that will be finalized within three months after receiving feedback from relevant departments. The draft policy was discussed at a meeting led by Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena on March 11, 2024, and incorporated certain suggestions.
CUMTA circulated the draft policy to the Municipal Administration and Water Supply, Home, Transport, Highways, and Minor Ports departments for their comments. After receiving their input, the policy will be finalized and implemented.
The government has directed CUMTA to draft the parking policy. The final policy will be released within three months, and the government expects it to be strictly enforced to prevent inconvenience caused by haphazard parking.
The policy aims to address the issue of motor vehicles parked on pavements, creating obstacles for pedestrians. The Greater Chennai Corporation has implemented a technology-driven street parking management system in collaboration with private service providers. Under this system, designated parking lots are marked, and parking fees are collected. The system has streamlined parking management and improved the parking experience for citizens.
Additionally, a multi-level car parking facility with a capacity of 222 cars has been created in T.Nagar, and the feasibility of creating more such facilities is being explored.
