Chennaiyin FC Bolsters Defense with Experienced ISL Defender Mandar Rao Dessai

Chennaiyin FC has made a significant addition to their squad ahead of the 2024-25 Indian Super League season, signing experienced defender Mandar Rao Dessai. The 32-year-old Goan defender brings a wealth of experience and a winning pedigree to the club. He previously won the ISL title with Mumbai City FC in 2021 and has also secured three League Shields – one with FC Goa in 2020 and two with Mumbai City in 2021 and 2023. Dessai began his professional career with Dempo SC in the I-League in 2013, and he has been a mainstay in the ISL since its inception in 2014. He has accumulated a remarkable 155 appearances in the league, including 14 playoff matches. He has also contributed offensively, registering six goals and 12 assists. In 2020, Dessai achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first player to reach 100 ISL appearances. His contributions extend beyond the club level, as he has also represented India in various tournaments, including the SAFF Championship, where he was part of the winning team in 2021.

Chennaiyin FC head coach Owen Coyle expressed his enthusiasm for the signing, emphasizing Dessai’s experience and understanding of Indian football. “In Mandar Rao Dessai we have got bags of experience coming in at left back. He’s a wonderful defender who can honestly say he knows the Indian football scene better than most, having made more appearances than nearly any other player in the history of the league.”

They’ve been champion two times and have been to playoffs so many times. I’ve played against them before and they always tried to have a good team,” Dessai said.
