Chicago’s tourism industry enjoyed a record-breaking summer in 2024, with an impressive 3.4 million hotel room nights booked between June and August. This represents a 5% increase compared to the same period in 2023, demonstrating the city’s continued allure for travelers.
The summer was particularly vibrant due to the hosting of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) and several other major conventions, leading to a surge in group hotel bookings. The city saw 1.1 million room nights booked for group events, surpassing pre-pandemic levels from 2019 and highlighting Chicago’s appeal as a premier conference destination.
Beyond conventions, leisure travel also flourished during the summer months. Popular events like Lollapalooza, one of the largest music festivals in the country, and the NASCAR Chicago Street Race contributed significantly to the impressive total of 2.3 million leisure room nights booked – a 4% increase over 2023. This influx of visitors was fueled by the city’s diverse range of attractions, entertainment options, and cultural events, making Chicago a top summer destination.
The strong performance during the summer season translated into record-breaking hotel revenue, totaling $942 million, alongside city tax revenue reaching $53 million. Both figures reflect a substantial 13% growth year-over-year, highlighting the significant economic impact of the tourism sector on the local economy.
Chicago’s global appeal was also evident with over 671,000 international visitors welcomed during the summer, further solidifying its status as a key travel hub.
Looking ahead, Chicago is poised for a bustling end to 2024 with major events on the horizon. These include the launch of the Theatre Season, the beloved Christkindlmarket, and the Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival, which draws thousands of visitors to experience the city’s festive spirit. Notably, Chicago was recently recognized as the Best Big City in the U.S. in the Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, further reinforcing its reputation as a premier travel destination offering a rich blend of culture, entertainment, and hospitality.
