The Kansas City Chiefs may be without a crucial offensive player at the start of the 2024 NFL season, as wide receiver Rashee Rice faces a potential ban from the league following his involvement in a high-speed multi-car crash in Dallas on March 30.
Rice, who was a key contributor to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory in 2023, could face a suspension of multiple games, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This would leave the Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes short-handed in terms of offensive firepower.
The most likely replacement for Rice would be veteran receiver Marquise Brown, who signed with the Chiefs this offseason after a career-best 1,008 receiving yards with the Baltimore Ravens in 2021.
Rice’s alleged involvement in the crash has been detailed in a recent report. According to a local NBC affiliate, Rice was racing a Lamborghini on the shoulder of a highway alongside SMU defensive back Teddy Knox in a Corvette. Knox allegedly tried to move into the shoulder, colliding with Rice.
Rice’s car then hit the center median before spinning back into the road and hitting two more cars. The police report indicates that Rice’s top speed was 119 miles per hour, while Knox’s was 116 miles per hour.
Rice and Knox were arrested and charged with one count of aggravated assault and collision involving serious bodily harm, as well as six counts of collision involving injury. Both men were released after posting $40,000 bonds.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has stated that the team will await the outcome of the legal proceedings before making any decisions about Rice’s status for the upcoming season. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Rice has been spotted training with Mahomes at an indoor facility in Texas.
