China Southern Airlines’ resumption of direct flights between Perth and Guangzhou is a significant development for Western Australia’s tourism industry. The Chinese visitor market is a valuable source of revenue, with 54,000 visitors contributing $230 million to the economy in 2023. The non-stop services are expected to positively impact visitor numbers and further boost the tourism sector. The three times a week service will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, providing 86,000 seats and 5,000 tonnes of cargo capacity into the Perth market. Fresh produce exports, business, and leisure tourism are key focus areas for the state, and the direct link between China and Perth will undoubtedly further connect Western Australia and benefit the entire economy. The Deputy Premier and Tourism Minister, Rita Saffioti, stated that this announcement is monumental for Western Australian tourism.
In addition to tourism, the direct flights will also energize adjacent sectors such as agriculture and business exchanges, solidifying Western Australia’s reputation as Australia’s Western Gateway. The flights will provide greater convenience for the local Chinese community in WA, allowing them to connect with family and friends back home. China Southern Airlines Regional General Manager for Australia and New Zealand, Jason Sun, explained that the airline’s resumption of the Perth route in the post-pandemic period is part of its commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Western Australian government and Perth Airport.
The flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, arriving in Perth at 22:10 and departing at 23:55 on the airline’s B787-9 aircraft.
