Outgoing US Indo-Pacific Command chief Admiral John Aquilino has sounded the alarm about China’s rapidly escalating aggressive stance and behavior across Asia, particularly in the South China Sea and around Taiwan.
Aquilino’s warning comes as Secretary of State Tony Blinken prepares to visit China from Wednesday to Friday, amid ongoing tensions between the two countries over issues such as China’s support for Russia’s war in Ukraine and its increasing military presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
Aquilino highlighted the dangers of China’s actions in the South China Sea, where Beijing has been using water cannons and other tactics to intimidate Philippine vessels and block military missions.
He also criticized China’s increasingly aggressive campaign of coercion and pressure around Taiwan, including increased maritime patrols and continued crossing of a central line meant to prevent miscalculations.
Aquilino’s departure after three years in the regional role underscores the ongoing importance of US engagement in the Indo-Pacific region, as it seeks to counter China’s growing influence and maintain stability in the area.
