China’s aviation industry is poised to reach new heights in 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and setting a course for unprecedented air passenger travel. According to Song Zhiyong, head of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), the country is on track to see up to 700 million passenger flights this year, a significant milestone for the nation’s aviation sector. This prediction reflects the strong recovery trajectory of the industry, which has already seen impressive growth in the first half of 2024. Passenger trips increased by 9% compared to the same period in 2019, demonstrating a robust rebound from the pandemic’s impact. The Chinese State Council echoes this sentiment, predicting that passenger numbers will exceed the 619.6 million recorded in 2023.
One of the key drivers behind this resurgence is the booming domestic travel market in China. The Lunar New Year holidays witnessed a significant surge in tourism revenues, reflecting a strong appetite for travel within the country. This domestic growth has been instrumental in bolstering the overall recovery of the aviation industry.
Beyond domestic travel, international travel is also experiencing a revival, fueled by global events like the Paris Olympic Games. There is a significant demand for flights to destinations such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Europe, further propelling the recovery of China’s aviation sector. The return of Chinese tourists has not only benefited China but has also revitalized the broader Asia-Pacific travel market. This highlights China’s central role in the region’s aviation industry, positioning it as a key player in the ongoing recovery of global air travel.
