China’s cultural and tourism sectors are experiencing a period of significant expansion, as revealed by Du Jiang, the vice minister of culture and tourism, during a recent expo in Tianjin.
In the first half of 2024, cultural enterprises in China generated a remarkable 6.5 trillion yuan (approximately 915 billion U.S. dollars) in operating revenue, marking a 7.5 percent increase compared to the previous year. This robust performance reflects the growing strength and vitality of the cultural industry in China.
Concurrently, domestic tourism witnessed a substantial surge, with 2.72 billion trips undertaken by Chinese citizens during the first half of the year. This translates to a 14.3 percent year-on-year increase in the number of trips taken. Furthermore, total expenditure on tourism reached 2.7 trillion yuan, representing a 19 percent year-on-year growth.
These figures underscore the continued prosperity of both China’s cultural industry and its tourism sector. They serve as a testament to the powerful role these sectors play in supporting employment, stimulating consumption, fostering cultural exchange, and enhancing overall quality of life in China. The vibrant growth of these sectors is a positive sign for the Chinese economy and a reflection of the country’s increasing focus on cultural development and tourism as key drivers of economic prosperity.
