The United States Space Force has issued a stern warning about China’s ‘breathtakingly fast’ development in space, expressing concern over the potential threat it poses to US space capabilities. General John W. Raymond, Commander of the US Space Force, highlighted China’s rapid progress in developing counter-space weapons during a visit to South Korea and Japan. He emphasized that China is moving at an alarming pace, rapidly expanding its space capabilities and potentially endangering US space assets.
In a significant move, China recently inaugurated a new Information Support Force, absorbing certain functions of the Strategic Support Force (SSF). Two independent forces, the military aerospace force and cyberspace force, will continue to operate directly under the Central Military Commission in a revised command structure. General Raymond noted that the US has observed this structural reorganization, which appears to prioritize space and information warfare within the People’s Liberation Army.
The US and its Asian allies, such as South Korea and Japan, share a common understanding of the threats emanating from China’s space ambitions. General Raymond stressed the critical role of space in modern defense and infrastructure, emphasizing the collective responsibility to protect these vital assets.
