China’s Sex Doll Industry Embraces AI, Raising Ethical Concerns

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming various aspects of our lives, and now China is exploring its application in the realm of sex dolls. According to the South China Morning Post, numerous AI and robotics companies in the country are introducing AI-powered ‘companion’ bots as a lucrative venture. This trend has also caught the attention of established sex doll manufacturers, who see AI as a potential game-changer to revitalize declining sales.

One prominent player, Shenzhen-based Starpery Technology, a leading sex doll producer, is spearheading the development of advanced AI companions capable of both verbal and physical interaction with users. Evan Lee, CEO of Starpery, revealed to the SCMP that their next-generation sex dolls are designed to engage in conversations and respond to touch, with prototypes anticipated by August 2024. These new generations of dolls often incorporate sophisticated sensors and AI, enabling them to move and converse, thus delivering a more engaging and lifelike experience compared to traditional sex dolls.

Starpery’s ambition extends beyond mere physical interaction. They aim to foster emotional connections with these AI companions, acknowledging the significant technical hurdles involved, such as battery capacity and mimicking human muscle flexibility. However, the production of these advanced robots comes at a cost, particularly due to expensive components like reducers, which account for a substantial 30% of the robot’s overall cost. Despite this, Starpery plans to make these AI dolls more affordable, with current prices hovering around $1,500, significantly lower than high-end models like Abyss Creations’ Harmony doll, which starts at $6,000.

While the advancements in AI-powered companions are exciting, ethical considerations abound. Critics raise concerns about the potential for blurring ethical boundaries, perpetuating harmful stereotypes, and diminishing genuine human connections. Furthermore, the rapid evolution of AI technologies often outpaces existing legal frameworks, creating regulatory uncertainties.

Starpery has ambitious plans for the future. By 2025, the company aims to develop robots capable of performing household chores, assisting individuals with disabilities, and providing elderly care. By 2030, they envision robots that can protect individuals from hazardous jobs.

The future of AI-powered companions is undoubtedly intriguing, promising a new kind of interaction that blends technology and emotional connectivity. However, it also raises critical ethical and societal questions that demand careful consideration.
