We all love a food storage hack, particularly when it prolongs the life of our favourite treats. Now, chocolate lovers can rejoice as there’s a little-known method for making it taste even better – and for longer. By following a few simple steps, you can ensure the last bite of your bar is as good as the first.
Experts from Wheeldon Brothers have a nifty trick to help you store your chocolate like a true connoisseur. “To ensure your chocolate retains its richest flavour and smooth texture, store it in a cool, dark place rather than the refrigerator,” they recommended. “The optimal temperature range for chocolate is between 18C to 21C. This temperature prevents it from melting while allowing its complex cocoa notes to shine through.”
The experts added that protecting chocolate from “heat sources and strong odours” is key in maintaining its quality. “Excessive heat can cause chocolate to melt or develop a white, powdery surface known as bloom, while strong odours can seep into the chocolate, altering its delicate flavour profile,” they explained.
TikTok user Ursula from Sweet Tooth Candy (@swttoothbuffets) agrees that, contrary to popular belief, fridges should be avoided. “Refrigerator? Absolutely not,” she affirmed in a video. “It will cause condensation – meaning moisture, meaning water – and if you work with chocolate you’ll know it’s made with oil and you’ll know oil and water don’t mix.”
The Wheeldon Brothers experts also stressed the importance of wrapping opened chocolate tightly in foil or back in its original resealable packaging where possible. They explained: “This prevents exposure to air and moisture, which can degrade its taste and texture over time, ensuring every bite is as delicious as the first.”
Explaining more about why chocolate shouldn’t go in the fridge, they added: “Higher temperatures allow the aromatic cocoa notes to become more pronounced, so aim to keep your chocolate at a steady 18C to 21C for the best taste experience.”
