Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger have faced heavy criticism for demolishing a historically significant home in Los Angeles known as the Zimmerman house. The Los Angeles Conservancy recognized the house as an outstanding example of Modernist architecture, and SurveyLA identified it as potentially historic, but the property lacked formal protections, allowing the owners to legally demolish it. The public has expressed outrage over the demolition, criticizing not only the destruction of the house but also the couple’s decision to hire architect Ken Ungar for the new construction, who is known for his modern farmhouse designs. The Eichler Network, a publication dedicated to mid-century homes in California, published an op-ed condemning the demolition, calling it a “gut punch” and a painful loss to the community. Reddit users have also voiced strong opposition to the demolition, with many expressing their disappointment and anger towards Pratt and Schwarzenegger. The Zimmerman house, designed by architect Craig Ellwood in 1950, was featured in Progressive Architecture magazine and was known for its mid-century modern design. Pratt and Schwarzenegger acquired the home for $12.5 million in an off-market deal in 2023 and tore it down soon after. The couple’s purchase decision may have been driven by the location, as the house was situated near properties owned by Maria Shriver, Schwarzenegger’s mother. Prior to its demolition, the house was in excellent condition, as evidenced by a TikTok video that went viral, showcasing its well-preserved original features, including floor-to-ceiling windows, a striking brick fireplace, and custom wood built-ins. The video has garnered over half a million views, highlighting the public’s dismay over the loss of this significant piece of architectural heritage.
