The Great British Christmas Sandwich Battle is ON! We at the Express put four supermarket giants – Tesco, M&S, Morrisons, and Asda – to the ultimate festive food test: a blind taste test of their Christmas sandwich offerings. The results? A delicious mix of triumphs and…well, let’s just say some sandwiches definitely fell flat.
The Five-Star Fanatics:
Some contenders soared to the top, earning a coveted five out of five stars. Tesco’s Ho-Ho-Hog Wrap, a pulled pork and apple slaw delight, proved a crowd-pleaser. M&S also took home gold medals for not one, but two, delectable sandwiches: their Pigs In Blanket Sandwich and their Surf and Turf Brioche Rolls. Clearly, M&S knows how to deliver a Christmas classic.
Asda’s Almost-Perfect Pair:
Asda earned high praise, too, though just shy of perfection. Their Cracking Christmas Club sandwich (£3.35) – a layered masterpiece of mature Cheddar, bacon, chicken, cranberry chutney, and onion stuffing – received a glowing 4.5 out of 5 stars. The reviewer raved about the chutney but suggested toning down the stuffing for an even more spectacular experience. Their Hog Roast sandwich (£3), generously filled with Bromley apple sauce, seasoned mayonnaise, and fried onions, also impressed, scoring a well-deserved 4 out of 5. While the white bread wasn’t the reviewer’s personal preference, its softness unexpectedly complemented the savory filling.
However, not all of Asda’s offerings were winners. The Boxing Day Sandwich (£2.50) suffered from an overpowering onion chutney, receiving a meager 2 out of 5 stars, and their Let it Spice Curry Wrap, described as a twist on a coronation chicken wrap, only managed a 3 out of 5 score.
Morrisons: A Mixed Bag of Festive Flavors:
Sadly, Morrisons’ performance was less festive. While their The Best Slow Cooked Beef and Roast Potato sandwich received mixed reviews – some praised the beef’s flavor, others found the potato dry and stodgy – ultimately averaging a 3 out of 5 star rating. The true disappointment, however, was their Pigs Under Blankets sandwich, which scored a dismal 1 out of 5, receiving a scathing ‘I don’t like it’ from the taste tester.
Missing in Action (and Possibly Delicious):
Mystery shrouded some of Tesco’s festive menu. Unfortunately, our mischievous elves (or possibly over-enthusiastic taste-testers) seemingly devoured Tesco’s Festive Chicken and Bacon Wrap and Cracking Curry West Sausage and Onions before reviews could be submitted! Perhaps a little too tempting?
