Google is testing a new feature in Chrome that aims to tackle the browser’s reputation for resource hogging. This feature, spotted in Chrome Canary builds, detects websites that are consuming excessive resources and alerts users.
The new feature, as seen in a GIF shared by leaker Leopeva64 on X, displays a pop-up panel when Chrome identifies resource-intensive tabs. This panel offers users the option to improve performance by making these tabs inactive with a single click on the ‘Fix Now’ button. Alternatively, users can dismiss the warning, individually close specific tabs, or choose to ignore the alert altogether.
For those who prefer a less intrusive browsing experience, an option to disable performance issue alerts in Chrome is also being tested. This toggle, previously observed in a Canary build in July, allows users to turn off these alerts, preventing pop-ups from interrupting their browsing.
While this new feature is still in testing and may not make it to the final release version, it represents a significant step towards improving Chrome’s performance and addressing user concerns about resource consumption.
