Defense Secretary Grant Shapps has stated that reducing 72,000 civil service positions is a practical measure to support Rishi Sunak’s commitment to increase defense spending to 2.5 percent of GDP by 2030. “It follows that the civil service will return to its pre-Covid level, which I consider to be a fair strategy,” Mr. Shapps stated in an interview with BBC Breakfast on April 24. “We feel it’s critical to provide funding for the front lines. It takes precedence over everything else. If we fail to defend the nation, everything else will become less important.” This announcement comes in response to calls for increased defense spending amid growing geopolitical tensions and security concerns.
