Climate activists from Extinction Rebellion staged a protest on Monday, blocking traffic on one side of the Evelyn Moakley Bridge in Boston. The group’s actions drew attention to the worsening climate crisis and the need for urgent action.
Prior to arriving at the bridge, the protesters held a rally at Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park in the North End. They then proceeded down Surface Road and Purchase Street, restricting traffic to one lane on each roadway.
The Boston Police Department issued a traffic advisory shortly after 6:05 p.m., alerting drivers to the protest and advising them to use alternate routes. Traffic was able to flow on the other side of the bridge during the demonstration.
The protesters’ decision to engage in civil disobedience stems from their belief that such actions are necessary to raise awareness about the climate crisis. They argue that traditional methods of advocacy have fallen short in addressing the urgency of the situation.
At approximately 6:30 p.m., the protesters vacated the Moakley Bridge, and Boston police announced the resumption of traffic flow in both directions.
