Hillary Clinton has strongly criticized her fellow Democrats for not taking the issue of abortion rights seriously enough in the years leading up to the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court. In an interview with The New York Times, Clinton accused the party of being complacent and underestimating the strength of the pro-life movement.
Clinton argues that Democrats failed to pass legislation codifying abortion rights into federal law, even when they controlled the Senate. She believes the party did this because they could not imagine that abortion rights would ever be at risk.
Clinton also praised the pro-life movement for its relentless efforts and organization, while lamenting the lack of a similar force on the Democratic side. She said that the right is always regrouping and raising more money, while Democrats do not have anything like it.
Clinton predicted that many people would dismiss her concerns once again this election cycle. However, she believes that the upcoming election is existential for the country and that if Democrats do not make the right decision, they may never have another actual election.
Clinton’s comments come as the issue of abortion rights is becoming increasingly important to voters. According to a recent Fox News poll, abortion is the biggest single issue among self-described Democrats (24%), suburban women (24%), self-described very liberals (23%), Black voters (17%), those with a college degree (17%), and voters under age 30 (16%).
