Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is gearing up to begin viaduct work at the Kathipara junction in Guindy as part of the 116-km Phase II Metro Rail Project. The project involves constructing a corridor from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur via Kathipara junction (corridor 5).
Undertaking construction at the junction poses challenges, as CMRL must ensure safety for airport flight paths and Phase I Metro Rail operations. CMRL officials have received permissions from the Commissioner of Railway Safety and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to build the viaduct.
Given the proximity of the Phase II viaduct to the Phase I viaduct at some locations, CMRL has also received approval from the Commissioner of Railway Safety. Work in these areas is restricted to midnight to early morning when trains are not operating to prioritize passenger safety.
Once operational, this stretch of the Phase II network will provide convenient access to southern suburbs like Madipakkam, Kilkattalai, Medavakkam, and Sholinganallur for residents of Madhavaram, Anna Nagar, and Villivakkam. Construction of corridors 4 (Light House to Poonamallee) and 3 (Madhavaram to SIPCOT via Thirumayilai) in the Phase II network is also progressing smoothly.
