Coastal Chic and Old Hollywood Glam Rule the Cannes Red Carpet

French Riviera style is in full swing over at the Cannes Film Festival, and attendees are channeling their inner Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot. Some, like Anne Hathaway and Rebecca Hall, have embraced coastal suiting, favoring light, breezy pieces. Others, such as Maggie Gyllenhaal and Julianne Moore, have leaned hard into Old Hollywood glamour.

No matter what style is speaking to them, many stars are breaking out their finest headwear for the occasion. But that begs the question: kerchief or sun hat? Team Sun Hat has some fierce advocates. Anya Taylor-Joy donned an enormous Jacquemus topper upon her arrival at Hôtel Martinez, and wore another straw hat around her neck the following day for promotion. Andie MacDowell channeled her mother in an oversized Chanel hat, affixed with a brooch. And Tilda Swinton paid homage to Christian Dior’s New Look with a black straw hat.

Meanwhile, Kaia Gerber has championed the kerchief on multiple occasions this week. While out about town, she donned an extreme cashmere scarf. But during the photo call, she went full-throttle milkmaid, wearing a custom Prada look complete with a matching head scarf.

Obviously, the kerchief and the sun hat each have their own appeal, but they also both bring the drama. Hopefully we’ll be seeing more of both beyond the Riviera this summer.
